Sunday, October 16, 2011 Two firefighters were injured when ceiling material fell on their heads as they battled a fire at an apartment complex started by a cigarette.

Aurora Fire Department spokesman Capt. Allen Robnett says the material fell Sunday on a crew inside the building. The two injured firefighters were able to walk out of the building before they were transported to a hospital.

Both suffered head injuries. One firefighter was released a few hours later, while another was being held for observation.

Robnett says firefighters responded to the fire on a third floor apartment at about 8:30 a.m. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and contain the damage to one room of an apartment at the 20 unit complex.

CHICAGO FF & COP HIT AT GAS LEAK

Sunday, October 16, 2011 A firefighter and a police officer working at the site of a gas leak this afternoon in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood were both hit by cars, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters were called out to the 10300 block of South Pulaski Road a little before 1 p.m. today, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva.

The firefighter was struck by a car and taken to Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island, and the police officer was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital, he said. Both were in good condition.
